Originally a collegiate church under the protection of the first Countess of Aumale, the sister of William the Conqueror…
The abbey reached the peak of its splendour during the XII th and XIII th centuries. At the time of the Revolution the abbey church and numerous other buildings were demolished.
As evidence of its prestigious past, there still survive an elegant early XVI th century round tower built of brick as well as a long convent building which has retained the external appearance of its last restoration by the Reformed Benedictines of Saint-Maur in the early XVIII th century. Up to 1793, this stone-built edifice faced in brick backed onto the abbey church and the cloisters. On its main façade can still be seen the coats of arms of its last protectors, the Princes of Bourbon and Dukes of Maine and Aumale.
