A twin renaissance

Since the recent arrival of a Benedictine community, Valmont has undergone a twin renaissance, both spiritual and architectural. This community of nuns, Notre-Dame-du-Pré of Lisieux, brought the abbey back to life in 1994 and has engaged significant work on the estate.

The monastery church is an important element in the heritage of the Seine-Maritime department. While nothing remains of the original Romanesque church built by the d’Estouteville family in the 12th century, the current church, built in the Renaissance style, is full of elegance and finesse. The high point is the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, located opposite the choir and which houses exceptional stained-glass windows and a masterpiece of sculpture attributed to the atelier of Germain Pilon, representing the Annunciation. Take the time to discover all the details of the decorations around the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, associated with figures of little angels and a curious representation of God the Father.

Deprived of its roof since the French Revolution, the nave has undergone extensive work in the past decade, including the addition of a roof whose contemporary design fits in well with the rest of the church. On the outside, above the portal, a decorative motif made by the painter Eugène Delacroix has been recreated from fragments of old stained glass…

Free visit (sheet with comments to ask at the reception).
The church (except the chapel of the Virgin ) is open: every day from 11am to 12pm and from 2:30pm to 5pm.
The chapel of the Virgin is open : daily except Tuesdays, in July, August and September from 3pm to 5pm. Open in the morning for groups (on request 15 days in advance).
