The rebirth of an endangered monument

A former Premonstratensian foundation, Lucerne Abbey has enjoyed a spiritual and architectural renaissance for over 60 years. This restoration is a wonderful story, thanks to the will of a man with a passion, Abbé Lélegard, who saved this magnificent site from ruin by purchasing it in 1959. His work continues to this day via the Fondation Abbaye de la Lucerne d’Outremer (Overseas La Lucerne Abbey Foundation).
Now artfully restored and even in large part rebuilt, the entire estate is characterised by rare harmony. The 12th century layout has been changed little, if at all, during the major restorations that have marked its history. The abbey church has a transitional style – it is Romanesque in its proportions and its sturdy tower, but shows hints of the Gothic in the design of its openings and the huge glass window of the chevet, which is characteristic of mediaeval Premonstratensian architecture. It is home to interesting collections, including beautiful recumbent statues from the 12th and 13th centuries and a curious gilded wood lectern decorated with a pelican.

A special charm emanates from all parts of the estate, whether one is in the cloisters, with their sober plantings, in the cellar draped in golden light, or in the dovecote, with its curious contours. Since September 8, 2022, the local bishop has given the mission to two priests to erect a Spiritual and Cultural Center within the Abbey of Lucerne. They now sing the office within the abbey church, information on the website of the abbey.
